What to expect for your first class

So you signed up for your first Jiu-Jitsu class and you're raring to go. Here's the information you will need to know and what to expect on your first day:

First take a deep breath because you're about to change your life in so many positive ways! Your first class will be a wonderful and incredibly fun experience.

This experience will generally be the same for both adults and children, with children's classes being a much more supervised and controlled environment.

First Class

To start: please arrive 10-15 minutes early as we need time to have you sign a waiver as well as fit you into a uniform (gi). After this you will be introduced to the coaches and professors and brought unto the training mat. We start the class by lining up on the edge of the mat before we bow to the Instructor. To help keep us free from injury, we then

1) start warm up exercises to get our muscles ready for the coming workout.

After warm-up exercises are complete we will start with the 2) first technique demonstration from the main instructors. If it's your very first class you will be paired with a coach or senior student to go over the basics to get you up to speed. After 2 or 3 technique demonstrations we will move onto what we call 3) positional sparring. This is where students are put into a specific position against another student and asked to complete a goal, such as escaping a position or finishing a submission.

After this segment we move onto 4) live training, where students start either standing up or on their knees and engage in full sparring. New students will be slowly and safely introduced into live sparring over time. Live sparring is very important to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to make sure that our techniques actually work in real life situations. However we understand that some students might not want to participate or are unable to do so, so you may skip this portion if needed or take extra time to become comfortable to it.

Finally we will line up to 5) cool down & finish class. Briefly go over what we learned that day, then bow to the professor and shake hands.

And that's your first class! The first step on an incredible journey that is both extremely fun and also very rewarding. Your stress will melt away while in class, you'll get in the best shape of your life and you'll make many friends along the way. We'll be here all the way to help you succeed!
